GUN OWNERSHIP IN GUATEMALA

Guatemala is one of the very few countries in the world with constitutional gun ownership rights. The Guatemalan Constitution recognizes the right of citizens to own firearms, making it a uniquely pro-self-defense nation in Latin America.

Private citizens can legally own firearms, but the process is regulated. Handguns, shotguns, and certain rifles are permitted, though fully automatic weapons are banned. To own a gun legally, you must:

  • Be at least 25 years old

  • Pass a background check

  • Register your firearm with DIGECAM (the national firearms authority)

  • Obtain a license to carry if you plan to carry it outside your property

Antigua Guatemala has a local gunshop with a wide array of gun brands, platforms, accesories and ammunition and our local gun range is only 20 minutes away in the outskirts of town. Even though ammunition and weapons are relatively more expensive in Guatemala as opposed to the US you can usually find good and affordable deals in the following platforms: shotguns, 9mm handguns, and .22LR rifles.

Many off-grid residents choose to own a firearm for home defense or wilderness protection, especially in remote areas. While the right exists, it’s crucial to follow the legal process and practice safe, responsible ownership.
